Learning for Employment (LFE) Poster Presentation Event. 17 October 2012

The Learning for Employment Poster Presentation Event is a longstanding annual event that takes place at this time of the year.  Students who are returning from their placement year are invited to present an A1 poster about their placement experience.

As well as the 200+ students who had been on placement, employers, academic staff, and first and second year sandwich students were invited to the event yesterday.

The purpose of the event is to: 

• provide information about placements and professional development to first and second year students to help second year students understand how important work placements are and the benefits they provide;
• enable staff and students to see and understand the variety and standard of work undertaken by students;
• help students who are entering the placements application process  prepare for and manage their application process;
• provide an opportunity for employers to gain an understanding of the student, their skills, experience and capabilities;
• give the student an opportunity to present and share their work with a varied audience and gain an understanding of their expectations..

The feedback from the event was that everyone in attendance was providing a highly informative and supportive learning experience for all the students in attendance.

Second year students spoke lyrically of the experience and about the advice they were given about finding the right placement for them sharing their placement experience.

As well as placement tutors attending, the event was used as a recruitment opportunity for employers attending:  those who had stands at the event were:  Eli Lilly, Experian, HSBC, IBM, PlusNet and Princes Group.

Employers were positive about how well the placement students who were presenting were interacting with their audiences.

Academic staff felt that all students presenting spoke with a passion and a confidence which demonstrates the value of the placement experience.
